When the Member of Parliament for the Blue Hills Constituency, the Hon. Sidney S. Collie invited the students of the constituency to the second annual back to School Jamboree, they not only received free back to school goodies, but he gave them a brand new spanking fully furnished airconditioned computer lab with flat screens.

The lab, a partnership between the Member of Parliament, the community and the Christ Community Church is located in the church’s community center and houses almost twenty internet ready modern computer systems. As he officially opened the lab, MP Collie encouraged the hundreds of parents and students to utilize the services of the lab while getting help with homework and other school projects. Mr. Collie said that the lab’s funding came primarily from funds allocated in the National Budget to each Member of Parliament for projects within their respective constituencies.

The lab is not only a response to cries from within the community for a safe environment in which youngsters can engage in afterschool activities particularly homework, but the Blue Hills PM was also concerned about the number of individuals lacking fundamental job readiness skills. The lab will also provide all residents of the community the opportunity to develop and enhance computer literacy skills.

The pastor of Christ Community Church, Deanza Cunningham, said his church was delighted to be able to partner with the residents in such a worthwhile project. He said this project represented what “our church is about, a community church” with the community at heart to do whatever we can to assist in the development of our people.

A friend of the Blue Hills Back to School Jamboree, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Hulan Hanna, while congratulating the Blue Hills Team on the opening of the lab, advised parents that while the computer was a positive tool and an asset to their youngster’s development, that they must remain vigilant and supervise the internet usage. He told them that they should look out and be aware that the internet can also be a negative tool used to promote immorality and promiscuity

The lab was officially opened by Mr. Collie followed by the cutting of the ribbon by Mrs. Edris Cunningham and Mrs. Mavis Johnson-Collie.

BLUE HILLS 2008 BACK TO SCHOOL JAMBOREE ANOTHER BLAST

The kids rushed to get online in their new computer lab after receiving back to school goodies. The packages included a P.E bag, composition note books, pencils, pens, mini geometry sets, rulers, erasers and sharpeners. Like last year, before the give aways, hotdogs and hamburgers, students and parents received much needed school safety information from Sargeant Pratt of the Royal Bahamas Police Force and tips on basic hygiene. The kids were also entertained by Levitical Sounds, the Christ Community Church Band.
