FNM Associations
From its inception, the FNM has embraced the incomparable contributions of women and young Bahamians in the development of the party and the country. The long and successful histories of the Torchbearers and the Women’s Associations are testament to this. Both groups are active and formally structured and work to fulfill and complement the aims and objectives of the Party as detailed in the Constitution. All women members of the Party are welcome to join the Women’s Association. Young party members (28 years old and under) are eligible for membership in the Torchbearers Association, the official youth group of the Party. Please use the links below to more fully explore each of these important groups within the FNM.
The Torchbearers
The Free National Movement Torchbearers Association was established in 1972 during a time when the late Sir Cecil Wallace Whitfield served as its leader. It was established with the intention of providing political and social interaction for its young members and to act as a training ground for those seeking to hold office in the party or seeking political office in the nation. The Women’s Association
The Free National Movement Women’s Association is forged out of a proud legacy. The FNM has many firsts for women to its credit: the first House of Assembly seat (Yamacraw) ever won by a woman (Janet Bostwick) in 1982, the first female Speaker of the House of Assembly (Italia Johnson), and the appointment of the first female Governor General (Dame Ivy Dumont).
