The Free National Movement Torchbearers Association was established in 1972 during a time when the late Sir Cecil Wallace Whitfield served as its leader. It was established with the intention of providing political and social interaction for its young members and to act as a training ground for those seeking to hold office in the party or seeking political office in the nation. The success of this statement is evident in the fact that over the years, presidents and officers in the Torchbearers Association have moved up the political ladder to become officers of the national party, Senators, Members of Parliament and Cabinet Ministers.

In a society where the youth of our nation have represented the swing vote during the past three elections, the role that Torchbearers play has become even more significant to the survival of our party. Thus, Torchbearers is that vehicle through which the party can once again garner the support and confidence of the young voter. The Torchbearers Association speaks loudly and clearly on issues relating to youth and youth development in our Bahamas.

The Torchbearers Association is prepared to listen to the young voters in an effort to get a clear understanding of the issues that they are most concerned about and of the direction they would like to see the Bahamas go in the area of youth development. The Torchbearers Association will canvass the various constituencies in an effort to determine what the youth of our nation are thinking, and to win their support. The Torchbearers Association will set up Torchbearers branch associations so that the FNM will have a constant presence, increase the membership of Torchbearers and attract more persons to the FNM. In this effort not only should we target those existing young voters, but also those future voters who are now between the ages of 13 and 17, because it is these voters who will play an important role in determining the party that will govern The Bahamas in future elections.

The Torchbearers Youth Association meets during the 1st and 4th Wednesday in every month. Meetings are held at the FNM Headquarters on Mackey Street at 7:30 p.m.

The Torchbearers is the first and oldest youth political organization in the country. Persons who have served in the Torchbearers include Tommy Turnquest, Carl Bethel, Teresa Moxey-Ingraham, Desmond Edwards and Dion Foulkes.

This year's Torchbearers Administration was successful in forming the Abaco Torchbearers Youth Association and we are aggressively working towards having Andros, Long Island, Inagua, and Exuma associations.
