The FNM Women’s Association

The Free National Movement Women's Association is forged out of a proud legacy. The FNM has many firsts for women to its credit: the first House of Assembly seat (Yamacraw) ever won by a woman (Janet Bostwick) in 1982, the first female Speaker of the House of Assembly (Italia Johnson), and the appointment of the first female Governor General (Dame Ivy Dumont).

In collaboration with constituency associations, the FNM Women's Association assists in national party events, and fundraising for the National Party. The Association is very proud of its many accomplishments but there is still much to be done. Join the Women's Association of the FNM and make a difference!

Message From the President

Caron Shepherd - President

Evolving into the 21st century has presented women with the confidence of expanding, advancing and growing to participate in the development of all spheres of this shirking global village. The world has witness women having their rights affirmed, gender equality established and more so now entering the halls of parliament internationally.

The voice of the woman resounds loud and clear, to proclaim we are ready, willing and able to make decisions for our children, families and ourselves. Voices have been heard, hand in hand together in unity and women march to a beat of progress. A unified woman determined to increase the awareness of the rights of women, resulting in the expansion of the next contemporaries and her society.

In the midst of enormous growth, small pockets of short falls still present themselves. Making policy decisions, increasing the number of women to the halls of parliament are of importance; equal pay on the top floor in some areas has yet to be changed and more importantly affirming the rights which discriminate against women.

Moving forward our Prime Minister The Right Honorable Hubert A. Ingraham and his government foresees crafting or altering the necessary policies to eliminate any disparities which may exist, resulting in a more developed society. The improvement and advancement of women are priorities on our government’s agenda and it is with an exuberant attitude we are pursuing meaningful policies for women.

While the government implements changes, the responsibility is placed within us to be determined, ensuring we have enhanced ourselves spiritually, educationally, and financially establishing ourselves so we will be able to benefit in changing times. These structured pillars made up in our lives will facilitate us to influence and inspire the next generation.

The Free National Movement Women’s Association objectives are to come together as a body, discuss imperative issues which concern women; inform women of parliamentary affairs and be the supportive arm of the national party.

I encourage you to forge ahead with adaptability, focus and willpower with a renewed spirit of purpose to contribute to our community, our party and our Bahamas.
